After a dog was left with a heartbreaking note, she is getting a second chance in life.

Last week, a man pulled up to a Dunkin’ Donuts in Santa Fe, New Mexico with a dog in his car.

“The male opened his door and let the dog out of the vehicle with the note attached to its neck,” Santa Fe police said in a release on Facebook. “The man then proceeded to go into Dunkin’ Donuts and order a cup of coffee. The dog followed the man from the vehicle to the front door of the business but was ignored by the man.”

He then left the dog at the donut shop with a note saying, “I’m free. I’m having babies.”

Thankfully, the dog is now under the care of Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society and has received an outpouring of support from the community.

“Unfortunately, stories like this are all too common,” the organization wrote on its Facebook page. “But, it’s people like you that care and truly make a difference in the life of these animals.”

Now named Jackie, she is doing very well at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society.

“She loves people and loves to give hugs to all the staff and volunteers,” Murad Kirdar, the shelter’s public and business relations officer, told This Dog’s Life. “She also likes to be carried around, if you don’t mind carrying a 45-pound dog.”

Kirdar added, “Jackie is a participant in our morning playgroups and runs around with the other dogs,” he says, adding, “but she always ends up hanging out with one of the trainers instead of her canine friends.”

The organization told us it is too early to know if she is indeed pregnant but says the dog was spayed due to the overpopulation problem at the shelter.

As for her previous owner, he turned himself into police after the public outcry.

“This situation has allowed us to have a constructive conversation about the right thing to do when you need to surrender an animal,” Kirdar said. “We understand it’s a difficult decision, but there is also a responsibility to surrender an animal safely.”

Kirdar believes with Jackie’s lovable personality she will have no problem finding a forever home. “With the massive response we have received, Jackie will get a second chance at life with a new family in the coming days.”
