A paralyzed dog was left on the steps of a Florida shelter with a heavyhearted note asking someone to give her a chance.

“Please help my Genie,” the anonymous owner begs in a letter left at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay begged.

“Genie (her name) is paralyzed from I believe her hips to her hind legs,” continues the note, which, after making the rounds on social media, has left thousands of people saddened. “I tried to manage her pain with medication from her vet, but they only ease her pain and she needs surgery. I cannot afford so I ask that the Animal Health Center heal her and find her a loving forever home. Thank you.”

In a post last week, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay updated its Facebook page with a photo of Genie, along with a response to the owner.

“We will care for Genie,” the update reads. “We will do our best to heal her body and mend her grieving heart. We will give her a second chance and find her a loving home. Will you help us? Give today, in honor of Genie, and for the thousands of homeless, broken, and abandoned pets who will follow after her.

Part of the organization’s ‪#‎GiveDayTampaBay initiative, a one-day fund was started for Genie. It far exceeded the goal, raising $20,849. The money will be used to help the paralyzed dog, along with others who need help.

After trying to help Genie with medication and physical therapy, she did not show any signs of improvement, so the Humane Society of Tampa Bay will explore surgery options and is undergoing a MRI this week.

The pup seems to be getting used to her environment, with the staff writing on Facebook:

“Genie is feeling more relaxed and secure and continues to be very brave in the face of her circumstance. She especially enjoys trips outside to sniff around and meet new friends. We will keep you updated on her progress.”
