When Jane Dickinson took her beloved dog Maisy to the vet, she was fearing for the worst. Her St. Bernard was going into surgery to remove a mass found on the spleen, along with examining her unusually full stomach that wasn’t digesting any food. The vet thought it may be cancer – and wondered if Maisy would even make it through the operation.

But when Dr. Nick Blackburn went in to remove the spleen, he discovered what was really going on with Maisy. The 8-year-old dog didn’t have cancer; she had a case of the teddy bears. According to Dickinson, Maisy had apparently devoured FOUR of her Chihuahua’s stuffed toys.
“To be honest, I was a little shocked, as she doesn’t play with toys and never even seen her chewing them,” says Dickinson. “She would steal my Chihuahua’s toys but just leave them outside. I had no idea how she was able to digest so many.”

Dr. Blackburn was just as surprised.
“It’s fair to say this was not something we were expecting to find!” he says. “We all know certain dogs enjoy chewing things they shouldn’t but managing to devour four full teddy bears is quite a feat.”
As for Maisy, she has made a full recovery and is back to her old self. She had a histology report, and it showed no signs of cancer. And for her toy-stealing ways?
“She’s not given the opportunity,” Dickinson says. “The toy box is now hidden away.”
