No matter what breed, or mutt, we have, we love our dogs all the same. But there are some types that are loved by more families in the US.
For the 28th year in a row, the Labrador Retriever was the most popular dog breed in America in 2018, according to the American Kennel Club.
It “shows no signs of giving up the top spot anytime soon,” AKC executive secretary Gina DiNardo said in a statement. “Labs make wonderful companions for a wide variety of people, and for good reason. The breed is very intelligent, friendly and great with children.”

It was in 1970 that the Labrador made its first appearance in the top 10. But it wasn’t until 1991 that it clinched the number-one spot, and it hasn’t looked back since.
Rounding out the top five are the German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, French Bulldog and Bulldog. While none of those should come as too much of a surprise, what is interesting is the rise of German Pointer, which hit the no. 9 spot, the highest position since it was recognized in 1930. (Last year, it came in tenth place).) One reason for this spike could have to do with CJ, the German Shorthaired Pointer, who took home the Best in Show honors at Westminster in 2016.
“People continue to fall in love with its versatility, extreme intelligence and willingness to please,” DiNardo said about the breed.
