NoHo Hip Spot Tom & Jerry’s Attracts More Than Just Techies

Share

With a whole lot of hoopla having been made in the media about Tom & Jerry’s bar being the place for Silicon Alley’s startup founders, VCs and hanger-oners to grab a brewski, you may expect a cold and impersonal world where Manhattan’s tech-elite spend their free moments basking in the glow of each other’s iPhone screens. But that just isn’t the case.

Nestled on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Houston at 288, this NoHo gem is not only a favorite among friendly techies of NYC (they do exist) but dogs as well! As long as your sidekick is leashed and controllable, he or she is welcome to join you at the bar or in any of the several tea light-illuminated wooden booths against the walls.

Besides nice patrons, the bartenders are also friendly by providing information about the beers on tap, the available wine and any specials. And it’s just not the people that make this place feel warm. The amount of wood lining the joint along with the tchotchke punch bowls (made for the actual Tom & Jerry drink) and taxidermied animals staring at you makes you kind of feel like you are in some remote cabin in the woods and not in the middle of 8 million people.

With the dark atmosphere and relatively low-playing music, Tom & Jerry’s did its part in highlighting the real attraction of this bar: the actual bar. Hand-painted signs listing dozens of original drink specials, seasonal favorites that change with the weather.

While warm drinks are a popular order during the chillier seasons and fruity foo-foo cocktails are a hit in the dead-heat of summer (or well anytime of year), the drink of choice seems to be the Bloody Mary. (It may have something to do with the fact this place is also a huge Green Bay Packers bar.)

One drink that was getting a lot of attention was the seasonal Hibiscus margarita ($12 cash, no cards accepted here), which comes garnished WITH AN ACTUAL FLOWER, an accent that probably would not impress most people in this city to address with all caps but for a transplants from the boonies of nowhere, you best believe I immediately fished that thing out and tried to smell it, real nice and embarrassing-like. They also have an array of sangrias available for you to sip (and fish out fruit).

Keep in mind that Tom & Jerry’s does not serve food (well except for the massive jar of seasonal trail mix and a few bags of potato chips) but does let customers order food in (within reason).

Tom and Jerry’s is a nice place to duck into on a chilly Sunday afternoon walk with the pooch or escape the extreme heat in the summer. I’ve heard a few people refer to this spot as a dive bar.  As someone who grew up in a post-industrial shithole made almost entirely of churches and bars and has seen Roadhouse upward of 20 million times, I would have to say this is a far cry from a dive. To me – and everyone else at the bar — it felt like a comfortable setting. A comfortable setting with a gigantic taxidermied moose and bison head mounted on the walls.
