With award season in full swing, one show is ditching the red carpet in lieu of green turf.
Today, the World Dog Awards will make its debut on the CW Network in a two-hour extravaganza. Hosted by comedian George Lopez at the Barkar Hanger in Santa Monica, California, the show will be honoring dogs that have stood out in entertainment, health services and the military along with pups that have become Internet sensations.
“America loves our four-legged creatures. They are a big part in the life of humans. They make us laugh, cry and tug at our heartstrings,” executive producer Robert Horowitz told the AP. “This is a way to say thanks.”
Like other shows, the World Dog Awards will be filled with glamour, tears, competition, and of course, goodie bags. Awards will be handed out in various categories including “Best Actor in a Supporting Role to a Dog,” “Favorite Costumed Dog Mascot” and “Outstanding Achievement in the Field. Scooby-Doo will also receive the lifetime achievement award.
Fans also got in on the action, getting to vote for “Most Pawpular Dog,” the pup that has the most influence on social media; “Happiest Reunion,” for the best video showing a military member and dog reuniting; and they even have one for the kitties: “Most Dog-Like Cat.”
The World Dog Awards is one of a few awards shows that have rolled out recently to highlight our canine friends. Back in November, Hilary Swank and Jane Lynch hosted Cause for Paws: An All-Star Dog Spectacular. In the coming months, the Pawscars and the Golden Collar Awards (reportedly going to come back in October) will both pay tribute to animals in film roles.
The World Dog Awards is in collaboration with Pedigree and will air on the CW at 8 EST/ 7 central.
