This Startup Is Looking to Make CBD Part of Your Dog’s Everyday Life

Everywhere you look there is a new CBD product hitting the market. For us humans, we see CBD, or cannabidiol, in everything from our morning lattes to our face cream and in our cookies.

Derived from the hemp plant, CBD’s rise in popularity is because the natural alternative remedy has been lauded for its safety and effectiveness in helping with a number of health issues – everything from anxiety to arthritis and heart health. (Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, it does not get you high.)

And the demand for it isn’t slowing down. Indeed, one market report stated the cannabidiol market could become a $16 billion industry by 2025.

This CBD gold rush has trickled down to our dogs, creating a new product category in the supplement category. A recent survey found that 39 percent of dog owners like the idea of CBD supplements for their pets, and 29 percent stated they would be interested in purchasing a CBD product.

“Through the years, the pet supplements market has benefited from the popularization and cross-over of various ingredients from the human side, such as glucosamine and omega fatty acids,” says David Sprinkle, research director for Packaged Facts. “Looking back, however, it’s hard to recall anything making more of a splash, in both human and pet supplements, than CBD.”

But not all CBD oil is created equally, with some brands being better than others.

Enter Pet-Ness. The New York-based startup is using a proprietary blend of botanicals to help bolster the effects of CBD, providing dog parents solutions for everyday care along with the ability to address specific health concerns.

“We created a full life line using CBD, one that you can give your dog throughout his entire life depending on what sort of needs he may have,” says co-founder Jeremy Feldman. “However, we don’t want to just be a CBD product, because we feel strongly there are a lot of botanicals in the market that could work with CBD.”

To ensure the products’ offerings provide dual benefits – CBD plus the additional supplements – Pet-Ness worked with holistic experts and veterinarians to create an optimum product line. “We really isolated what botanicals would work in the treats and work best for each formula.” says Feldman.

The result is a wellness line that not only provides the benefits of full-spectrum CBD oil, but also utilizes other natural ingredients’ benefits – allowing for a more well-rounded product.

“We wanted to make sure we provided a treat that provided wellness and had a lot of different benefits that would be effective,” says Feldman. We felt that while hemp is fantastic, there are a lot of other things that are really good, so why not offer our customers everything in one package?”

Currently, Pet-Ness’ main focus, its soft chews, includes three different formulas, all of which are made in the USA and are third-party tested.

Its Thrive line, which is given every day for preventative measures, is chock-full of curcumin, yucca schidigera and ginger root, among other good-for-dog ingredients, to help with heart health and immunity. The blend works in conjunction with CBD oil to increase its effectiveness.

While providing your dog with a sort of insurance policy by giving them an everyday supplement, like Thrive, is great, dog parents often seek out CBD to target specific ailments. They are looking for natural solutions in which there are little to no side effects but can help improve their dog’s quality of life.

For Pet-Ness, this comes in the form of its Calm and Mobility lines. Calm, which includes herbs like echinacea, chamomile and St. John’s Wort, help calm and relax dogs, while Mobility, focuses on reducing aches and pains using turmeric, willow bark and other ingredients to work with CBD. All three offerings contain 4 mg of CBD per treat.

The company also has smaller treats, called Happy Treats, along with Hemp drops, or tinctures of pure CBD oil.

Moving forward, Feldman tells us Pet-Ness plans on rolling out salmon oil, a cat treat and another dog treat that includes cheese and CBD.

Of course, with every new product you give your dog, it is so important to consult with your veterinarian or a professional.
