And now a company is pulling five of its rawhide brands off the counter, after it was discovered they can cause diarrhea and vomiting because of a chemical in them.
United Pet Group voluntarily pulled its products American Beefhide, Digest-eeze, Healthy Hide, Healthy Hide Good-n-Fit and Healthy Hide Good-n-Fun.

The company discovered two of its facilities in Mexico and Columbia, and a supplier in Brazil were using an ammonium mixture as a processing aid when producing the rawhides — a method that has not been approved in the U.S.
“United Pet Group received very limited reports of pet illness based on the volume of possibly affected rawhide chew products manufactured and distributed,” says the company in a statement. “The primary complaint received from consumers was that the affected product had an unpleasant odor. Diarrhea and vomiting were also reported.”

United Pet Group (behind other well-known brands like Nature’s Miracle and FURminator) also stated other effects from digesting a rawhide that has this ammonium compound, include “reduced appetite, and gastric irritation including diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian depending on severity.”
The recall involves rawhide products with lot codes starting with AH, AV, A, AI, AO or AB and has expiration dates from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020. This information can be found on the packaging.
Consumers should throw the rawhides away, return to the store for a refund or directly contactUnited Product Group (call 855-215-4962 to get a refund from the company).
