After a dog heard puppies crying near her at a boarding facility, her maternal instincts seriously kicked in, causing her to do the unexpected.
Maggie, a golden-colored, medium-sized dog, was staying at Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming in Canada, when she broke out of her cage in the middle of the night and laid by a kennel to comfort two scared puppies.
“We’ve never really seen it before, where a dog sneaks out to some puppies and is so excited to see them,” Alex Aldred, a Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming employee, told ABC News.
The sweet ordeal was all caught on tape. After employees left for the day, they checked on the surveillance cameras, which is when they noticed Maggie sitting in front of the puppies’ kennel. Aldred’s mom, Sandy, drove back the facility to check on the dogs and decided the best thing to do was let the three be together.
“She kind of directed Sandy to the puppies’ kennel so Sandy let her in and she was being really affectionate,” Aldred told the outlet. “Sandy stayed in their for about 15 minutes and then said, ‘Well it looks like they need each other,’ and then let Maggie stay the night in their kennel.”
The next morning the dogs were still close to each other.
“When we came back in the morning they were all still cuddled up together.”
For those that know Maggie, this reaction isn’t too surprising. The dog had a litter of her own, all adopted out by a local humane society, before she found a loving forever home. So, when she heard distressed puppies, her maternal instinct kicked in.
“It’s innate in a lot of female dogs, especially if they’ve had a litter in the past,” Deanna Thompson, who works at the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society, the nonprofit that rescued the puppies, told the outlet.” It’s just in their nature. We’ve seen it in a lot of dogs even with male dogs, when they hear other puppies crying they want to console them and make sure they’re feeling safe.”
