Another Dog Food Recall, This Time From Brands Science Diet and Hill’s Prescription Diet

Share
Hill's Science Diet Turkey & Barley Canned Dog Food.

Dog-food brand Science Diet has joined the list of brands being pulled from shelves due to potentially elevated vitamin D levels.

The company, owned by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, voluntarily recalled many flavors in its canned-dog food portfolio.

While vitamin D is essential for your dog’s health, too much of it can hurt your dog. If a dog has elevated levels of vitamin D in her system, she may display a number of symptoms, including vomiting, increased urination, increased desire to drink water, drooling, weight loss and loss of appetite. If vitamin D levels are extremely high, it can lead to kidney failure, among other health issues.

If you think your dog has been exposed to dog food with elevated vitamin D levels, take her to the vet immediately. According to the FDA, a dog will often make a full recovery by discontinuing the food.

Hill’s is just the latest company that has pulled its food from shelves due to excessive vitamin D. Since last November, eight brands have recalled its dog food for this reason.
