Dog parks are one of the most sought-after amenities for major cities, according to The Trust for Public Land. They are a place for our best friends to hang with their buds, get some much-needed exercise and have a major sniff session for mental stimulation.

So what cities have the most dog parks for our four-legged friend? Well, it depends.

New York City comes in first place for the most dog parks (145), but when you think about how many people live in the city, the Big Apple doesn’t make rank high. The city that comes in first place when TK per capita is in fact Boise, Idaho. While it may seem surprising to many dog parents, the city has 5.7 dog parks per 100,000 people (as opposed to New York City’s approximate 1.7 dog parks per 100,000 residents). Second place is Portland, Ore., followed by Henderson, Nev.

Overall, there are 810 off-leash dog parks in the country’s largest cities, according to The Trust for Public Land. Since 2009, when the organization started tracking dog parks, there has been a 74 percent increase in dog parks.
