Thanks to fast-acting firefighters, a 14-year-old dog is alive.

Rescue workers from Muskegon County in Michigan were called after there had been reports of a dog falling through the ice on Lake Michigan.

Upon arrival, they spotted the senior golden retriever struggling to stay afloat in the frigid water.

The firefighters devised a play, with one walking out towards the dog, while another followed behind with a rope, so he could pull both the dog and person to safety.

Once near the dog, the rescue worker got down on his stomach, pulled the dog out of the freezing water and held onto the pup, as they were pulled to shore. When they got closer, the firefighter was able to stand and carried the dog to safety. On land, the golden retriever was wrapped in a blanket and carried to a warm vehicle.
