Netflix’s hit series 13 Reasons Why deals with challenging subjects, including bullying, suicide and sexual assault. Fortunately, the actors in the show had puppies to help them during these tough scenes.

In an interview with PopSugar, actors Dylan Minnette, who plays Clay Jensen explains how therapy dogs helped Katherine Langford, who plays Hannah Baker, and others on set.

“I know there was one scene, I wasn’t around, but they had therapy dogs on set,” Minnette tells the publication. There was a puppy per hour. They really tried to help out. The puppies helped. [Langford] had the brunt of the emotional stuff. I mean, we all have very emotional parts, but this is about her character.”

The drama is based off of a novel of the same name by Jay Asher. In it, Baker commits suicide but before doing so creates 13 tapes. The tapes, which are passed around to 13 classmates, explain how their actions impacted her choice to end her life.

For years, dogs have helped people cope with difficult situations. They have visited disaster scenes, retirement homes, schools, funeral homes and those at hospitals. Their presence has been known to reduce stress and blood pressure, while providing emotional support.
