In what is considered one of the biggest dog events of the year for New Yorkers, the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is fast approaching.
On Oct. 24, hundreds of dogs will let their alter egos shine as they marching around Tompkins Square, dressed up in extremely adorable costumes for all spectators to enjoy.
The event kicks off at noon with a costume contest, with the winners receiving a number of prizes including Broadway tickets and gift cards. The “Best in Show” winner will be able to get their paws on an Apple smartwatch. We know, your dog had been begging you for one. Speaking of begging, the event is sponsored by Purina’s Beggin strips, so there will be plenty of Halloween treats for dogs to gobble up. Another treat? Purina has committed to donating one bag of dog treats to Petfinder shelters across the country for every post to Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #Howloween. That’s a super easy and fun way to help a dog in need.

Need help in the costume department? Mike Franz of the Beggin’ brand team tells us that “our judges look for creativity and originality, as well as costumes that are eye-catching and memorable.” While there will be store-bought costumes, along with meticulously handcrafted one-of-a-kinds, the organization just wants owners and their dogs to have a great time.
After the winner has been crowned, all dogs dressed in costumes will have the opportunity to be in the parade. Reportedly one of the biggest dog processions in the world, we are sure this event will not disappoint. (We are taking bets on how many Donald Trump dogs there will be this year.) There will also rescue organizations — Yorkie Rescue 911, Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Waggytail Rescue and Animal Haven Shelter — for anyone looking to bring a homeless dog into their lives.

The parade has been a long tradition for the park, with one organization, Friends of First Run, being the catalyst behind the event.
“When Friends of First Run started this event 25 years ago as our main fundraiser to help maintain the dog park year-round, we never imagined it would have built the caliber of event it has,” says Garrett Rosso, Friends of First Run President. “We really owe a lot to the passionate dog owners in New York City and the surrounding areas. They really help make the event so unforgettable.”
Admission to the event is free but suggested donation is $5. All money will go back to Friends of First Run to help maintain the park year round. We will see you there!
