A dog close to death in Kentucky was saved because of Pokémon Go.

Three Harlan County brothers – Hunter, Ethan and Tanner Thomas – along with their mother, Elizabeth, were searching for Pokemon last Thursday when they saw a dog crawling along railroad tracks near their home.

Upon closer examination, the dog, a beagle, was beaten, shot and part of his tail and ear were missing.

“It’s mind-blowing,” Elizabeth told news station WYMT. “That was not what we expected when we left that night to go walking and play that game.”

A nurse, Elizabeth used her medical skills and knowledge to bandage the dog up and kept him safe until the family could bring him to the Harlan County Animal Shelter the next morning. Shortly after, the shelter transported the beagle to Corbin Animal Clinic where the team treated him.

Now named Ash Ketchum after the main character in the original Pokeman series, the dog is not out of the woods yet. It was discovered he has a heart murmur and will undergo surgery to repair it.
