For New York City doxie owners, spring can only mean one thing: the Dachshund Spring Fiesta.

Occurring this past Saturday at Washington Square Park in Manhattan, the annual event brings together hundreds of dachshunds and their owners to celebrate the low-riding breed.

People exchange stories, introduce their dog to other pups and are in awe of all the different dachshunds who descend on the park — dapples, double dapples, solids, wire coats, piebolds, Isabellas, you name it.

In its 25th year, the festival began when organizer, Adrian Milton, adopted a 4-year-old dachshund named Damon after the pup lost his brother, Pythias. Heartbroken, the dog developed behavioral issues and his former owners no longer wanted to hassle the dog. Milton agreed to take him. Damon desperately wanted a friend, so Milton would introduce him to other doxies and started putting up signs around the neighborhood to see if dachshund owners would want to meet up in Washington Square Park. The Dachshund Friendship Club was born and its bi-yearly celebrations — Dachshund Spring Fiesta and Dachshund Oktoberfest — resulted.
