After losing his best friend of 12 years, a depressed dog’s spirits were finally lifted when a special friend entered his life.

Named George, the senior dog has been devastated ever since losing his partner “Blackie” two years ago.

“George has been heart broken and has grieved with anxiety so bad that he has almost died twice,” his owner, Jacquie Litton, writes in a Facebook post.

Her daughter, Alexis, added, “He would meet us outside our cars crying, he would sit outside the door constantly wanting in crying and would chew holes in his skin due to the anxiety,” she tells This Dog’s Life. “Throughout the night he would go around our yard looking and howling constantly for Blackie.”

But his outlook recently changed when a special friend walked into his life. Literally. A duck waddled onto the Litton’s Tennessee property and into the heart of George.

On Aug. 8, Jacquie was drinking her morning coffee and looked outside to check on George. It was then she noticed a duck, now named Donald, was sitting right next to her dog.

“We have no idea where he came from or how he found George but as soon as he saw George he fell in love,” Alexis tells us. “It was almost a miracle, but Donald showed up on the anniversary of Blackie’s death.”

The two have since become pretty much inseparable. “George isn’t waiting for us anymore, he never cries any more and he’s always making sure that Donald is beside him,” she says, “It’s just so amazing they’ll be walking beside each other and the duck will be talking and George looks at him like they’re having a normal conversation!”

The family is hoping Donald sticks around, as he has helped George out of his two-year slump.”You can tell by George’s face that he is just finally happy again!”

Here are a few of our favorite things the two do together:
