Man’s best friend will do anything and everything for us — including losing his life.

Last week, a fire suddenly broke out in the Baltimore home of Erika Poremski.

Poremski had gone out to her car to grab something when the house burst into flames. Inside was her 8-month-old daughter Viviana and her 5-year-old dog Polo.

The woman tried desperately to get to inside — suffering burns on her hands and face in doing so.

“I tried to keep getting in,” Poremski told CBS News. “She was up the stairs, but the fire smoke was so heavy I couldn’t get past it. I kept running back out and back in, trying to get up there. Then, the door curling started falling and I couldn’t get back in.”

While she waited for firefighters to show up, her dog was inside protecting the little girl from the flames. Poremski believed that Polo deliberately stayed with Viviana in spite of having the opportunity to escape to safety.

Tragetically, Polo did not survive the flames but Poremski believes her daughter did because of the dog. When firefighters discovered Viviana the dog was sprawled across her, protecting her from the flames. The little girl suffered burns on just her arms and sides because of this.

It has not been reported how the fire began but Poremski told the outlet she believes Polo had some sort of premonition they were in danger.

“That day of the fire, he was acting weird all day,” she told CBS. “I even told a friend I was going to take him to vet. He was crying and following me around and had a seizure from anxiety.”

Poremski not only lost her dog but she also lost her house and Viviana is not out of the woods yet. There is a GoFundMe campaign set up to help pay for the girl’s medical bills and get the family back on its feet again.
