A rescued Chicago dog literally puts on a happy face while recovering from the flu.

Named Herbert, the 5-month-old pit bull mix, was taken in by PAWS Chicago, an animal rescue organization, but had a case of the dog flu before being rescued.

The pup was taken in by foster parent Amanda Robles, an animal lover with a pet-free home, as the nonprofit wanted to get him away from other dogs, so the virus wouldn’t spread.

During his recovery time, Robles taught the pup a special trick: to smile! She recorded his special skill and posted it on Facebook. To date, it has received more than 300,000 shares and 150,000 Likes. (It went up on Jan. 10.)

The pup will see be ready for adoption, but in the meantime, “he’s learning how to be a puppy, getting lots of cuddles, and working on training,” PAWS Facebook page reports.

The organization believes the dog was mostly confined before being rescued. “He displayed all the signs that whatever his upbringing, he appeared to be kept in a cage,” Sarah McDonald, PAWS Chicago spokesperson, told ABC 7.

But with a lot of love and TLC, Robles has helped the dog build confidence, with McDonald telling the outlet, “He’s really come out of his shell wonderfully.”
