A major pet food company is once again pulling its products from shelves.

Midwestern Pet Foods is voluntarily recalling 10 of its dog and cat food brands after they may be contaminated with salmonella, according to the FDA’s website.

The brands are: CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Meridian, Venture, Unrefined, Sportmix, Sportmix Wholesomes, Pro Pac, Pro Pac, Ultimates, and Sportstrail.

The possible contamination comes from the following lot code: “EXP AUG/02/22/M1/L#. It can be found on the back of the bag.

The announcement came after the company tested finished products and said they “may contain bacteria,” but notes that “no human or pet illnesses have been reported to date.”

It is recommended to dispose of the food in a way that does not come in contact with pets, children, or wildlife. Stores are asked to remove from shelves.

Salmonella-contaminated dog food can not only impact canines, but humans, too, if they don’t wash their hands, or touch a dog who is infected. Dogs (and cats) who become infected with salmonella may become tired, experience diarrhea, have a fever, or vomit. Contact your veterinarian if concerned.

Humans may experience similar symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea and fever, along with cramping and nausea. In rare situations, salmonella can result in serious ailments, including arthritis, eye pain, and endocarditis.

This latest move comes after the company pulled products from its shelves a few months back after a reported more than 70 dog deaths were potentially linked to their brands. In December the company recalled its Sportmix dog food after it contained high levels of aflatoxin, which comes from mold. (The next month, the FDA said it expanded its investigation to other Midwestern Pet Foods brands.)
