After being diagnosed with cancer, Gov. Jerry Brown’s beloved dog Sutter has passed away.
California’s beloved “first dog” has passed away after losing his battle with cancer.
“Sutter passed away peacefully this afternoon with the Governor and First Lady at his side and was laid to rest at the family ranch in Colusa County, where he loved to roam, sniff and play,” Brown spokesman Evan Westrup said in a statement Friday afternoon.

The 13-year-old Pembroke Corgi was treated in October for an aggressive form of cancer. Despite undergoing emergency surgery, the cancer was not entirely removed.

In the past few days, his health deteriorated rapidly and Brown, and his wife, Anne Gust Brown, made the decision to say goodbye to him.
Adopted by Brown, a democrat, in 2010 after winning the governor’s race, Sutter was a favorite personality at the Capital.

During his time there, Sutter helped forge relationships and friendships, including with Senate Republican Leader Bob Dutton, despite Brown having to negotiate with him on the state budget at the time.

“Sutter and I have developed a relationship,” Dutton told Recordnet.com. “I met him down at the governor’s conference room. As we got to talking, I noticed there was a fur ball under my seat. He was very calm, laying there, sleeping. I think he was looking at me to be a protector of the taxpayer’s dollars.”
He also became the perfect “spokesdog” for some of the governor’s issues, with Sutter and dog puns taking center stage in certain policies, including the governor’s efforts “to herd the budget vote” “keep new spending on a short leash” and “bark if you hate deficits.”

As Sutter become more of a fixture, his public persona grew. His Twitter account has more than 11,000 followers and his Facebook page having nearly 20,000 fans.
Sutter’s first dog duties will be taken over by his sister Colusa, a corgi the Browns welcomed in 2015.
