The upcoming Westminster show is welcoming some new breeds to the canine competition, including purebred cats.
The three new dog breeds making their debut are the sloughi, American hairless terrier and the pumi.

The pumi (Pronounced POOH-me) is an ancient Hungarian herding breed known for its “whimsical expression” and corkscrew-like curls. The breed is active, alert, intelligent and enjoys working. The breed does best in an active household – one that can provide both physical and mental stimulation.

The sloughi (Pronounced SLOO-ghee) hails from Africa and is known for its hunting skills. With its short coat and elegant frame, the breed has a greyhound appearance. The breed, from the hound group, is loyal to its owner but may be aloof to strangers.

Lastly, the American hairless terrier, a descendant of the rat terrier, was introduced in the U.S. in the early ’70s. The breed is alert and was bred to hunt rats. Great for people with allergies, the dog is considered friendly, active and smart.
The breeds were accepted into the prestigious competition after being recognized by the American Kennel Club.
Also, the first time in Westminster’s 141 years, there will be a cats. No, they won’t be trotting around the ring. Rather, they will be part of the Meet the Breeds” event on Feb. 11. While cats have made an appearance in the past, this is the first time they not be separated from the dog show.
