A baby elephant is learning trust and to love thanks to a dog named Duma.
Nicknamed Ellie, the elephant is currently residing at the Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage in Zululand, Africa after his herd rejected him when he was a baby. Volunteers guess that his group left him after he was born with an umbilical hernia and abscess, a condition that would have resulted in death in the wild. The animal sanctuary, which typically deals with abandoned rhinos, took the elephant in.

But after being saved, all wasn’t rainbows and butterflies for Ellie. Being a social species, the elephant was depressed, lethargic and uninterested in everyday activities without his herd. This all changed when Duma entered the picture. The German shepherd and the baby elephant were introduced on a sand pile and immediately Ellie’s mood changed for the better, and he has a new outlook on life.
